Excerpt from Journal of Economic Perspectives

In the summer of 2008, an article was published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives based on research which found that

"higher-educated parents spend more time with their children; for example, mothers with a college education or greater spend roughly 4.5 hours more per week in child care than mothers with a high school degree or less. This relationship is striking, given that higher-educated parents also spend more time working outside the home. This robust relationship holds across all subgroups examined, including both nonworking and working mothers and working fathers. It also holds across all four subcategories of child care: basic, educational, recreational, and travel related to child care. From an economic perspective, this .... can be viewed as surprising, given that the opportunity cost of time is higher for higher-educated, high-wage adults. In sharp contrast, the amount of time allocated to home production and to leisure falls sharply as education and income rise."

NYC Universal Pre-K seats available

NYC has been allowed by the State to go ahead with its mid-year UPK expansion. City Council is partnering with the Department of Education (DOE), the Administration for Children Services (ACS) and childcare advocates to help enroll four-year olds in FREE Universal Pre Kindergarten (UPK) programs by Friday, January 30.

Currently, there are over 4,000 half-day and full-day UPK seats still available for children who turned four by December 31, 2008, in public schools, child care centers contracted by (ACS) and community-based organizations contracted by the (DOE). UPK is a flexible program because families can enroll their four-year olds in programs where they live, where they work or where they go to school.

Research clearly supports UPK as a way to support the social, emotional and academic skills of children as well as prepare children for kindergarten.

The DOE Web site has a directory of programs with available seats at (http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/PreK/default.htm).

Love and Other Impossible Pursuits

Natalie Portman is starring in a film that is shooting right now at the home of a Discovery Toys customer. Evidently, the kitchen of the home plays a big role. When he asked if he should remove all the Sticker Art stickers from his refrigerator door the production team said, "No," they should leave everything just the way it is.

"Love and Other Impossible Pursuits," a Don Roos-directed adaptation of an Ayelet Waldman novel, is set to be released this fall. The story takes place in summer. Filming now in wintry New York presented a typical Hollywood problem...there are no leaves on the trees. If you see a house with leaves put back on the trees, you'll know the movie makers have been there.

Discovery Toys Give Back Hostess Program Aims to Donate $350,000 in Learning Products

(New York, NY), Dec. 2, 2008

When the 30-year-old direct-selling company heard that donations to Toys for Tots were down this year, and that the charity organization would be hard-pressed to deliver gifts to thousands of needy families on their rosters, Discovery Toys quickly mobilized to help fill this shortfall by leveraging the efforts of the thousands of individuals across the country who host Discovery Toys parties in their homes and workplaces.

Shoppers looking for quality educational toys, books, and games for the children in their lives can contribute to families in need by making a purchase at a Discovery Toys party. Explains Cindy Franco, Discovery Toys Vice President of Sales, “When someone hosts a Discovery Toys party, she earns free products based on the level of sales from that party. A party generating $550 in total sales, for example, earns the hostess $100 in free products. Discovery Toys will match this earned free product value and make an equal donation to Toys for Tots.” The matching donation program runs through December 12. The toy company hopes to contribute upwards of $350,000 in new toys to help bring some joy to families who find themselves in need during these difficult economic times. The program affords individuals the opportunity to assist these children without having to trade off dollars spent on holiday gifts. The more someone spends, the higher the contribution.
